Osteoarthritis
Restore Joint Health with Ayurvedic Wisdom.
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition characterized by the gradual wear and tear of cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility in the affected joints — most commonly the knees, hips, hands, and spine. As we age, or due to overuse and mechanical stress, the protective cartilage between joints breaks down, causing bones to rub against each other. While modern medicine focuses on pain management or joint replacement, Kaivalya Ayurveda approaches osteoarthritis from its root — aiming to restore joint health naturally and holistically.
Ayurvedic View of Osteoarthritis
In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is referred to as Sandhigata Vata, a condition where the Vata dosha accumulates in the joints (Sandhi) and causes dryness, stiffness, and degeneration. The deterioration of joint tissues is considered a result of aggravated Vata, poor digestion (Agni), and a lack of nourishment to bone tissues (Asthi Dhatu). At Kaivalya Ayurveda, we work to balance Vata, lubricate the joints, strengthen surrounding muscles, and enhance tissue regeneration using classical therapies, herbal oils, and rejuvenating formulations.
Causes of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis may be caused by aging, overuse of joints, obesity, trauma, or hereditary factors. In Ayurvedic terms, consuming dry, cold, or stale food, excessive physical exertion, emotional stress, and improper lifestyle habits lead to the vitiation of Vata dosha. When this aggravated Vata settles in the joints and is not addressed, it results in the drying and degeneration of cartilage. At Kaivalya Ayurveda, identifying and addressing these root causes is an essential step in restoring joint functionality.
Ayurvedic Treatment for Osteoarthritis at Kaivalya Ayurveda
At Kaivalya Ayurveda, we offer a personalized and multi-layered approach to osteoarthritis treatment. Our therapies aim to reduce pain and stiffness, improve lubrication, and prevent further degeneration. Signature treatments like Janu Basti (oil pooling on the knees), Pinda Sweda (herbal bolus massage), and Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage) are used to nourish and rejuvenate the joints. Herbal medications such as Yogaraja Guggulu, Maharasnadi Kwath, and Dashamool preparations help manage inflammation and support bone tissue regeneration. Panchakarma therapies are recommended for detoxification, especially in chronic or aggravated cases.
